I’ve learnt so much from The Muppets. Kermit taught me of The Rainbow Connection. GoBo taught me of meaningful, simplistic acts of kindness. And Ernie taught me of divine jazz music, accompanied by his boogie woogie bugle sheep. But the most meaningful lesson happened in 1987 with Maureen the Mink.
Maureen the Mink? I bet you’ve never heard of her, unless of course, you were a five-year old in 1987 like was I… or you were my little sisters because I forced you to watch it over and over and over again. :)
One would do no better justice to her divine biography than by quoting MuppetWiki directly:
Maureen the Mink is Kermit’s Christmas present to Miss Piggy in the 1987 special A Muppet Family Christmas. She is Miss Piggy’s biggest fan and worships the ground Miss Piggy walks on.
When Miss Piggy heard Kermit had gotten her a mink, she had initially thought he had meant a mink coat. Upon meeting Maureen, she was ready to punch Kermit, but once she heard that Maureen worshiped the ground she walked on, she declared Maureen a wonderful present.
Man. Jim Henson hit it spot on. Demonstrating to an audience of KIDS that MINKS have feelings, he impacted a future that is forever kinder. Those kids are today’s adults. Today’s vegans. Today’s KIND human beings. Today’s INDEPENDENT eaters. And these human beings are positively affecting the Earth. And that’s pretty cool, all because of Maureen the Mink.
That is why, on this Earth Day, I chose to do something that’s taken me a decade to do. Something that has bothered me for 10 years! Something that’s been a total skeleton in my closet, to be blunt with you.
In 2004, I bought a mink hat.
Because my grandmother loves mink. And I thought it would impress her. And it totally did.
But then I got a dog and something changed. Something about Maureen the Mink stuck in my head. Why was I holding onto something that so conflicted against my principles to support animal rights? Why did I keep a fashion piece that I so hated?
So on this Earth Day, I made a decision. Revealing it for the first time in YEARS…
Oh yes, I loved it all over again. A toy soldier’s uniform from the Nutcracker…
LARA’S HAT. From Dr. Zhivago (this one almost made my heart break!).
But then I remembered about Maureen the Mink. And I said, “Gwendolyn? Should we do it?”
And since she makes all of our decisions…
We decided to sell.
She wanted chicken from the proceeds, but I told her otherwise. ;)
Here is Gwendolyn, bidding adieu to the mink that she never knew (it’s always been in the closet).
Yet she posed haughtily about the separation (my puggle is like a cat, I swear to you!).
Okay, here is a real happy Gwendolyn pose!
I was over-freaking-joyed to be toting this mink away from my home.
But before saying our goodbyes, I needed a drink. Or two. ;)
Hello, Fashion fix of Regent Square.
Totally cool owner. She offered me $12 for this piece (purchased originally at $350).
But I countered and accepted $13 because I prefer odd numbers. ;)
And she, of course, wanted my hat.
The IFAW earns our mink proceeds on this Earth Day.
“Founded in 1969, the International Fund for Animal Welfare saves individual animals, animal populations and habitats all over the world.” – IFAW.
And that is exactly how we want to celebrate our Earth: by supporting a cause that does.
Happy Earth Day.
